A. Niika Quistgard, CAS
Founder & Director
A second generation native of Northern California, Niika’s favorite activities as a child were reading, playing music, and making meals and potions from the wild grasses and herbs she played among. With a innate interest in spiritual truth and a naturally devotional nature from an early age, she was drawn to books depicting life in Asia.

Niika's wonderful mother shared and supported Niika’s interests, teaching her to garden, cook healthy delicious food and cultivate a sense of wonder and reverence in the presence of nature and spiritual truth. By age 12, Niika began experimenting with breath control, meditation and pondering the answers to life’s “big” questions. At age 14, she was introduced to kirtan (devotional song) and hatha yoga, and decided to become a vegetarian. At age 17, she met her Hindu guru and, instead of attending college, choose to dedicate herself to five years of ashram life (two in India) where she matured thru her experience of seva (service), svadhyaya (study and text recitation), darshan (the presence of her teacher) and saadhana (daily spiritual practice).

Years later, while raising her son as a single mother and working in the field of interior design, she endured a prolonged period of undiagnosed illness doctors couldn’t cure. She decided to take full responsibility for recreating her health. She had just begun a degree program in eco-psychology, but when she heard that a school of Ayurveda was opening in California, she shifted her plans and enrolled right away. With its truly holistic foundation, Ayurveda embraces the full person, working with all the senses and the mind, to revitalize a harmonious relationship with one’s own nature and Mother Nature–perfect medicine for Niika! She earned her certificate in Ayurvedic Medicine from the Calfornia College of Ayurveda in 1998.

Niika has worked as a clinical Ayurvedic specialist for 10 years, specializing in women’ health and happiness. (How can we truly know health without happiness?) She’s been teaching Ayurveda, yoga, and meditation for 12 years. She speaks publicly in a wide variety of settings, inspiring others to experience the benefits of Ayurveda thru her magnetic presentations.

She was editor and publisher of Inside Ayurveda, the first international journal of Ayurvedic medicine. She now writes frequently for Yoga Journal Magazine.

Niika plans Rasa’s group programmes, teaches and consults. She enjoys connecting with Rasa’s guests, acting as cultural translator and guide, and offering her transformative approach to applying traditional Ayurveda in the spirit of true healing.
“Sanju” Sanjeev Kumar S.
Siddha Vaidya Therapist, Manager
Sanju does a great job making sure Rasa runs smoothly, but his real value comes from his twenty years experience as Siddha Vaidya therapist to patients from all over the world. (The Siddha Vaidya system of medicine is closely aligned with Ayurveda, native to Dravidian South India.) His background in Siddha Vaidya pharmacology and physiotherapy, along with his natural compassion, make Sanju a great teacher and insightful collaborator in patient diagnosis and treatment planning at Rasa Ayurveda.

Sanju trained directly under his ashan, Raman Harichandran, the great and well-loved Siddha doctor and master Siddha therapist, and studied under Harichandran's senior students as well. During these years, Sanju learned the traditional guidelines for how and when to gather botanical ingredients, how to prepare treatment materials correctly, how to apply therapies to patients for the best results, and how to observe patients for clinical signs.

In the traditional gurukul style, Sanju studied the foundations of Siddha philosophy, pathology and diagnosis in Tamil Nadu with Natarajan, a senior student of Harichandran.

He learned to prepare complex Siddha medicines from original texts using traditional processing techniques, to produce high-quality internal and external formulas (tailam, kashayam, choornam, leyham, etc.), specific to the needs of each patient.

With a certificate from the Jayabharath Institute of Pancha Karma, Sanju continued to serve the Harichandran family, working for many years as Head Therapist and Siddha Pharmacist for the Indian Longevity Clinic and International Siddha Vaidya Institute, run by Harichandran’s son, Reghu, and his business partner Dr. Rajkumar Reghunathan.

While many in his family are professionally-trained vocalists, Sanju claims he is not a singer. But it’s a rare day at Rasa we don’t hear him spontaneously bursting into song, brightening everyone’s’ spirits!

“Whatever the disease may be,” she says, ”my fundamental approach is to balance the doshas by means of shaamana and shodhana methods to restore health.”

(Shaamana is mildtreatment dependent on followup care for long term effectiveness. Shodhana is deeper, longer-lasting treatment based on elimination, essentially, Pancha Karma.)

“Ayurveda treats the whole person,” she says, ”not just a single tissue, organ or organ system. Whether a patient’s pain is in mind or body, faith and confidence are important. Patient and doctor are always partners in the healing process.”
